260 years In 1755, the two great colonial powers, England and France, were at war over America. After a particularly bloody battle between British America and New France, only a few survived – among them was a 22-year-old colonel, George Washington who, 34 years later, would be elected first President of the United States. In that same year, Russia opened its first university. Marie Antoinette was born in Vienna. And the first dictionary of the English language was published.
Meanwhile, in the spring of 1755 in Copenhagen, the daughter of the King's chef fell in love with Frenchman Jean Marchal, marking the beginning of the story of the iconic d'Angleterre.
This is the 260th anniversary of that love story.
In recent years, the iconic hotel lovingly known to many as "The White Lady" has seen exciting times and now she again shines bright on Kongens Nytorv, more beautiful than ever at the impressive age of 260. Very few hotels on earth can boast of having catered to society's elite during four centuries, and throughout this anniversary year, we will be celebrating Copenhagen's Grande Dame with a variety of events and wonderful little surprises.
