Spring in full bloom

Spring has returned to Copenhagen and in all of Copenhagen's parks are blossoming threes and people soaking up the sun. We have now opened our terrace at The King's New Square, from where you can enjoy the light and warm weather that comes with the spring – and not least enjoy our menu card, which has some new additions.

The spring is always a special time of the year, but this spring is especially a spring to remember since the d'Angleterre is also celebrating its 260th birthday.

An Ongoing Fairy Tale
Serving the Elite for Three Centuries
In a city made famous by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales, not every fairy tale is fictional.
It was in 1755 - 260 years ago - that Jean Marchal, a young French servant in the royal Danish Court, fell in love with Marie Coppy, daughter of the chef of the royal palace in Copenhagen. Not only did Jean and Marie share a consuming passion for each other, they also shared a passion for the culinary arts and a desire to present them with perfection to His Majesty King Frederik V of Denmark and his family.
Eventually, the young couple established a restaurant where they could serve the aristocracy, and thus the legend of the d'Angleterre was born. As with all fairy tales, Jean and Marie lived happily ever after...and their ethos has lived on for more than two-and-a-half centuries. Today, every single person associated with the ownership and daily work of the d'Angleterre affectionately and conscientiously continues Jean and Marie's legacy and the passion for service and hospitality that began in 1755.
During the 2015 Jubilee Year, the d'Angleterre will celebrate 260 years of serving the world's elite with a variety of events and festivities. And to complete the circle of the fairy tale, the monarch who brought Jean Marchal and Marie Coppy together in 1755 will be represented at a Gala Ball in April by his great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandson, HRH Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark.
Happy birthday to the Queen
Last week HM Queen Margrethe celebrated her 75th birthday. On her procession through the streets of Copenhagen, escorted by the Hussar Guard Regiment's horse-mounted squadron, the Queen also passed by d'Angleterre on Kongens Nytorv.

D'Angleterre's Creative Director Alan Evensen had created a beautiful bouquet which, according to tradition, the doorman presented to the Queen. The custom of presenting the monarch with a bouquet on their procession through the city started on the Silver Jubilee of King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid in 1960. Since then, the gesture has been a d'Angleterre tradition.

In honour of the occasion, d'Angleterre also opened the 42-metre long balcony belonging to the celebrated Royal Suite and invited schoolchildren from Ryggaards International School to pay tribute to our Queen, waving flags from their respective countries.
Wedding fair
On the weekend of 20th-22nd March, d'Angleterre was literally bursting with romantic inspiration for this season's upcoming weddings when the Above & Beyond Society held a wedding fair in The Palm Court and the Louis XVI ballroom.

Exhibitors included Georg Jensen, Kassandra, Kagekompagniet and Illums Bolighus.

New additions to the menu
In March, Restaurant Marchal appointed Christian Gerhard Gadient head chef.
Originally from Austria, Christian Gerhard Gadient came to Denmark with his Danish girlfriend five years ago where he started out at AOC and was later involved in the opening of Marchal. Before that, he worked at several of the very best restaurants in London.
Ever since Marchal opened its doors, Christian Gerhard Gadient has had a strong influence on the cuisine. Now the menu comprising many small á la carte dishes also features his own signature dishes. We proudly recommend trying out these delicious new additions to the menu.
